    Butane 10-25 106-97-8
    Propane 10-25 74-98-6
  • Identification of Hazards

    • Eye Contact
    • Skin Contact
    • Inhalation
    • Ingestion
  • First Aid

    Effects of exposure by:

    • Eye contact - Irritating to eyes
    • Skin contact - Slight skin irritant. Prolonged or repeated contact can cause dermatitis.
    • Inhalation - High levels of vapour / mist may cause dizziness. Can cause irritation of the respiratory tract.
    • Ingestion - Accidental ingestion is an unlikely event.

    Treatment of over exposure by:

    • Eye contact - Contact lenses should be removed. Irrigate copiously with clean, fresh water for at least 10 minutes, holding the eyelids apart, and seek medical advice.
    • Skin contact - Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water or use a proprietary skin cleaner. DO NOT use solvents or thinners. If in doubt, seek medical advice.
    • Inhalation - Remove to fresh air, keep the patient warm and at rest. If breathing is irregular or has stopped, administer artificial respiration. Give nothing by mouth. If unconscious, place in the recovery position and seek medical advice.
    • Ingestion - If accidentally swallowed, obtain immediate medical attention. Keep at rest. DO NOT induce vomiting.
  • Fire-fighting measures

    Suitable extinguishing media:

    • Alcohol resistant foam
    • Carbon Dioxide
    • Dry powder
    • Water spray/mist
    • Do not use: water jet.
  • Unusual fire and explosion hazards

Fire will produce dense black smoke containing combustion products which may be a health hazard. Appropriate self-contained breathing apparatus may be required. Run off from the fire must not enter drains.

  • Unsuitable extinguishing media

    None

  • Exposure Hazards

    None

  • Protective equipment for fire-fighters

Containers exposed to fire should be sprayed with water to lessen risk of explosion.

  • Accidental release measures

    Personal precautions:

    • Exclude sources of ignition and ventilate the area.
    • Exclude non-essential personnel.
    • Avoid breathing vapours.
    • Contain and collect spillage’s with non-combustible absorbent materials, e.g. sand, earth, vermiculite and place in a suitable container for disposal.
    • Do not allow to enter drains or water courses.
    • Clean preferably with a detergent; avoid the use of solvents. If the product enters drains or sewers, the local water company should be contacted immediately; in the case of contamination of streams, rivers or lakes, the National Rivers Authority.
  • Environmental precautions

    None

  • Clean-up and Neutralisation methods

    None

  • Handling and Storage

    Precautions for Safe Handling:

    • Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors. They may form explosive mixtures with air.
    • Prevent the creation of flammable or explosive concentrations of vapour in air and avoid vapour concentrations higher than the occupational exposure limits.
    • Use only in an area from which all sources of heat, sparks and open flames have been excluded.
    • Avoid inhalation of vapour and spray mist.
    • Avoid skin and eye contact.
    • Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in areas of use and storage.
  • Storage Precautions

Store below 50ºC in a dry, well ventilated place away from sources of heat, ignition, and direct sunlight. No smoking. Observe the label precautions.

  • Exposure controls / Personal protection

    Technical protective measures:

    Ingredient Name OES/MEL 8hr TWA 15min STEL
    Pentane OES 600ppm 750ppm
    Butane OES 600ppm 750ppm
  • Engineering measures:
Provide adequate ventilation to maintain the flammable vapour concentration well below the lower explosive limit and ensure the airborne concentration of substrates to which an OES has been assigned is below that OES (Occupational Exposure Standard)
  • Respiratory protection:
Air-fed respiratory should be worn when this product is sprayed if the exposure of the sprayer or other people nearby cannot be controlled to below the occupational exposure limit and engineering controls and measures cannot reasonably be improved.
  • Hand protection:
When skin exposure may occur, advice may be sought from the glove suppliers on appropriate types. Barrier creams may help to protect exposed areas of the skin but are not substitutes for full physical protection. They should not be applied once exposure has occurred.
  • Skin protection:
Cotton or cotton/synthetic overalls are normally suitable. Grossly contaminated clothing should be removed and the skin washed with soap and water or a proprietary skin cleaner.
  • Eye/Face protection:
Eye protection designed to protect the eyes against liquid splashes should be worn.
  • Physical and chemical properties

  • Toxicological information

    Ingredient LD50 (Animal/Oral)
    Pentane > 16g / Kg (Rat)

There is no data available on the product itself.

    • Exposure to organic solvent vapours may result in adverse health effects on the renal and central nervous systems. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscular weakness, drowsiness and in extreme cases, loss of consciousness.
    • Splashes in the eyes may cause irritation and reversible local damage.
    • Pentane is moderately irritating to the skin and eyes. High concentrations of vapour may cause narcosis. There are no reports of long term adverse effects in humans attributed to Pentane.
  • Ecological Information

There is no data available on the product itself. The product should not be allowed to enter drains or water courses or be deposited where it can affect ground or surface waters. Pentane has good biodegradability, is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms, and harmless to mammalian life.

  • Disposals considerations

Do not allow into drains or water courses or dispose of where ground or surface waters may be affected. Wastes, including emptied containers, are controlled wastes and should be disposed of in accordance with regulations made under the Control of Pollution Act.

Using the information provided in this data sheet, advice should be obtained from the Waste Regulation Authority whether the special regulations apply.
